Geo-engineering properties and three-dimensional deformation characteristics of some ultimate disposal site clay soils of Rajshahi City Corporation, Bangladesh

CONFERENCE PAPER

Sayada Mahfuza Siddika, A.T.M. Shakhawat Hossain, Hossain Md. Sayem,, 12th Asian Regional Conference of IAEG, South Korea, Jeju Island, South Korea, 2019. Climate change has become one of the most important environmental concerns of our planet. This research concerns with the hidden influence of water including ground response due to wetting and drying effect by the impact of periodical changing condition of climate on the Madhupur Clay soils of the Jahangirnagar University Campus, Savar, Dhaka, Bangladesh. Three dimensional deformation characteristics have also been evaluated to interpret the ground response. It is established that seasonal variations of water level and moisture content has a direct influence on the change of water content and deformation characteristics within the soil mass of the study a rea. Three dimensional deformation characteristics (3-D swelling strain) measured by ISRM (1979) apparatus show that the swelling strain along normal to the bedding plane is higher than the swelling parallel to the bedding plane with medium swell potential. In monsoon period increasing amount of rainfall will cause the rise of water level which may result in swelling of the soil and lower amount of rainfall will result in the decrease in water content of the soil mass that may cause the soil to shrink during the dry season. The continuous wetting and drying effect due to seasonal variation of water level may result in the small to large scale structural damage in the existing buildings of the Jahangirnagar University Campus.

They are living in the Ukhiya hills of Kutubpalong, Balukhali and Teknaf area of Bangladesh in an anti-humanitarian condition. They constructed many temporary shelters by cutting hill slopes, trees of Ukhiya hills. These hills are mainly composed of very loose to loose sands with some silts & clays. Earthquake induced liquefaction risk in the Rohingya refugee camp area might create major destructions on the constructed temporary Rohingya shelters in the camp area. This research is mainly focused on the risk assessment based on Liquefaction potentiality index (LPI) values at different earthquake magnitudes. LPI values have been evaluated and LPI based risk maps of the camp area were produced. It is established that the hills are at risk at earthquake magnitude (M) 5 or above, Based on observed LPI values four risk zones are identified in the Rohigya refugee camp area of Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar, Bangladesh. Sustainable geotechnical & geological engineering solutions are recommended for the Rohingya victims to reduce the risk. Immediate measures must be taken by the concerned authorities including United Nations(UN), UNHCR, NGO’s and Government of Bangladesh (GoB) to replace the Rohingya refugee camps from risky hill slopes to safer ground and need to ensure Rohingya’s return immediately to Myanmar to save lives and properties during earthquake and to attain sustainability in the Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar area of Bangladesh.
