PROFILE

SHORT BIOGRAPHY

Professor Sayeed Ferdous has been teaching anthropology at Jahangirnagar University, Bangladesh, since 1995. He was trained in Anthropology from Jahangirnagar University, followed by a Master of Arts in Social Science from the University of Amsterdam, Netherlands, and a Doctorate from Lancaster University, UK. Dr. Ferdous finds his niche in the blurred zone of History and Anthropology. Sayeed's research interests include South Asian Studies, Historiography, Memory/Forgetting, The Subaltern, Postcolonial Nation, State, and Nationalism. His book titled, Partition as Border-Making: East Bengal, East Pakistan, and Bangladesh was published in 2021 by Taylor and Francis. Focusing on the significance of the mundane in history and its presentness, this research contributes to understanding postcolonial South Asia beyond “Indocentrism”; in partition studies and border and borderland studies. Sayeed also jointly edited a Bangladesh Reader, published by Taylor and Francis in 2026. He has contributed to anthologies and journals related to the 1947 Partition. In 2021, he jointly conducted a research project on the Partition migrants to Dhaka, in partnership with Goethe Institute, Bangladesh, titled "Inherited Memories (Part II)." In 2023-24, Professor Ferdous served as a visiting fellow at the Institute for South Asia Studies, University of California, Berkeley. Currently, Sayeed Ferdous is working as the Pro-Vice Chancellor of Bangladesh Open University. Besides teaching, research, and his administrative responsibilities, Sayeed loves to discuss diverse issues on social media handles.
