PROFILE

SHORT BIOGRAPHY

Widely known as 'Yusuf Hassan Arko' in the art world of Bangladesh. Besides working as a Professor in the department of Drama and Dramatics, Jahangirnagar University, he is an Actor-Director-Writer-Researcher on theatrical arts. Yusuf Hassan Arko obtained his Ph.D from Okinawa Prefectural  University of Arts, Japan in 2009 as a MONBUKAGAKUSHO scholar. He was awarded the "Masao Yamamoto Award" (President's award of that university) for his excellence in academics during his doctoral study in Japan. Yusuf was furtherly awarded "Japan Foundation Fellwoship" for his Post-Doctoral research in 2011-2012. As a researcher, his field of study is indigenous Bangladeshi  theatre. He has been publishing plenty of research articles and books on the above subject. Recently, he is focusing on the musical aspects of Bangla traditional theatre. Besides academics, he has been practicing theatre with a theatre group Natyakendra since 1991 where he acted, designed for numerous plays of the group. Other than those productions, he works for several groups and institutions as a free-lance director. Ekolobbo Akhyan, Sheetayon, Totakahini, Kobi, Neelakhyan, Maatbring, Devdas, Bratto Aami Montrohin, Jera, Man of La Mancha, Boshikoron, Geeti Chondraboti, Dohondoyita, Jol Poloker Gaan, Punnaho, Laily Mojnu, Swarnoboal etc. are his accalaimed productions in Bangladesh. There are 4 published books and plenty of other writings in different midea in home and abroad.

It is a study on the unique musical style of performance in Bangladeshi traditional theatre where singing is treated to be describing the story in different modes of expression which are ministically composed in the form.

It is based on the doctoral research on Bangladeshi traditional theatre which has been transmitting with it's unique aspects like narrativity through musicality with monistic composition of various modes of expression.

It is an anthology of four production scripts based on the composition of William Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet, Rabindranath Tagore's Totakahini and Boshikoron, Tarashanar Bannerjie's Kobi. These plays were produced and Directed by the author in Bangladesh stages through different times.
