BOOK

Muhammad Ullah, State, Identity and Diaspora in Tanvir Mokammel's Films, pp.232, May, 2022.

About the Book:

The book is a result of the research on refugee diaspora depicted in two films by Tanvir Mokammel ‘The Border Line’ (Seemantorekha) and ‘The promised Land’ (Swapnabhumi). The research was conducted under the Bangladesh Film Archive fellowship 2020-2021. The vulnerability of the diasporic situation presented in these two documentaries is analyzed by contemporary political philosophical theory. The issues of statelessness, identity crisis, and diasporic condition of the displaced people as visualized in the films are also the major concerns in contemporary global politics. Due to the partition in 1947 many people had to leave their homeland under cruel violence and massacres. A huge number of the Bengali Hindu population left the then East Bengal and took refuge in many places in India. Similarly, many Biharis and Bengali Muslims migrated from India and came to the then East Pakistan which is Bangladesh now. Seventy years have passed since then.  How are these people now? And how the political boundaries of barbed ware have affected people’s lives and relations? All these have been presented in these two films. The book attempts to understand the eternal human relationship with one's motherland under the new structure of political identity as depicted by the state boundaries.

Geo-Cultural Identity Theories Studies Forum (GCITSF)

Backgrounds and Aims:

Geo-Cultural Identity Theory is a more recently developed theory in the field of culture and political philosophy. In the meantime, it has been a rapidly growing field of research in international academic arena. Indeed, this theory has come into appearance in 2013 indicating the shortcomings of a well-known theory “multiculturalism” through the publication of the article “In Defence of Geo-Cultural Identity: An Argument Against Kymlicka’s view of Multiculturalism and Minority Rights” which was published by Central European University (CEU) Political Science Journal. Soon after, a PhD research degree has been awarded on that topic in Laval University, Canada applying this theory in music. The philosophical foundation of this theory is seemed very strong when the application of this theory paves the way of keeping great contributions beyond the boundaries of political philosophy and culture to the fields of literature, society, politics and more promisingly in policy making. Though it is a matter of surprise, but true that the exponent of this theory is of the East, well-known in the West as an environmental philosopher, a political philosopher, a cultural theorist, and a deep ecologist. More specifically he is a native Bangladeshi and from one of the best public universities in Bangladesh, Jahangirnagar University. He is Md. Munir Hossain Talukder, Professor of Philosophy. In producing original thought in the university, in Bangladesh, and in the East, as well as, advancing eastern thought in the global sphere, Professor Talukder’s contribution is profound. In flourishing new dimensions in the world of knowledge, Jahangirnagar University warmly welcome such a great contribution and achievement of him and expresses firm determination to promote this milestone work. Through the study of this theory, Geo-Cultural Identity Theories Studies Forum (GCITSF) expect to apprehend the comparative analysis of different theories of contemporary state-system and of contemporary political philosophy, and to find out the theoretical foundation of culture, and raise the issue of the philosophical and theoretical necessity of preserving culture of the smallest community like indigenous and ethnic people as well as of any other communities whose life and culture is in need of attention, and to uphold the importance of the theory in determining policy at national, regional, and international  level.

Characteristics:
This forum is completely apolitical, non-communal, non-profitable and utterly educational, cultural and research based institution. It aims to collaborate advanced research in the fields of political philosophy, culture, ethnic studies and policy issues both national and international levels.
