Thesis Title: Chemical Investigation on the Leaves of Ipomoea fistulosa”.

The works involved the extraction, isolation, purification and identification of secondary plant metabolites. Modern separation techniques such as column chromatography, paper chromatography, thin layer chromatography (TLC), preparative thin layer chromatography (PTLC) and HPLC were used for the purification of the isolated compounds. The isolated pure compounds were characterized on the basis of IR, UV/Visible, 1HNMR, 13CNMR, C-H and H-H COSY, HSQC, HMBC, GC-Mass, Mass (CI and EI) and chemical reactions.

Thesis Title:Studies on Direct Functionalization of Aromatic Substrates

Supervisor : Professor Dr. Tsugio Kitamura, Department of Chemistry and Applied Chemistry, Saga University, Saga, Japan

Direct functionalization of aromatic C-H bonds through the formation of new carbon-carbon bond between simple arenes and aryl substituted alkynes were carried out using hydroarylation and iodoarylation reactions without the involvement of any toxic transition metals. In the hydroarylation reactions (i) FeCl3 /AgOTf /TFA (ii) BF3 and (iii) trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) were used as catalysts and iodoarylation reactions were carried out using molecular iodine (I2) in the presence of hypervalent iodine, PhI(OAc)2 as an oxidizing agent. Direct iodination reactions were carried out using molecular iodine in the presence of potassium peroxodisulfate (K2S2O8) as an oxidizing agent in the presence of TFA, H2SO4.
