PROFILE
SHORT BIOGRAPHY
I teach, do research, am always curious to learn more, and communicate science. I think that an enthusiastic and self-motivated teacher can help shape the future of the next generation of learners through teaching, research, and other scholarly activities. I am now developing abiotic stress-tolerant and micronutrient-enriched rice cultivars using genome editing and genetic engineering as a visiting research fellow at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI). In 2006, I earned a doctorate in Agricultural Biotechnology from Chungbuk National University in South Korea. At Tsukuba University in Japan, where I was pursuing a JSPS Postdoctoral Fellowship from 2007 to 2009, my primary duty was to create genetically engineered lettuce plants that included the taste-modifying protein Miraculin. At the University of Florida (2009–2011) I completed my study as a Research Associate where I was developing transgenic greening and canker-resistant citrus cultivars. I have an extensive background in plant tissue culture, bioreactor-based commercial production of plant cells, and plant genetic engineering. My primary research interests include identifying new genes from local biodiversity, genome engineering, and genome editing to generate climate-resilient and micronutrient-rich crops. I am also interested in functional genomics, synthetic biology, nanotechnology, microbiome studies metabolomics, metabolic engineering, clean-energy production, secondary metabolism in endangered species, and their conservation. As the coordinator of Jahangirnagar University's institutional biosafety committee, I was attempting to build institutional biosafety & biosecurity policies and procedures. My role as an additional director in the Institutional Quality Assurance Cell at Jahangirnagar University required me to organize and lead a wide range of training activities and research and design novel approaches to teaching and learning (IQAC, JU). Through Science Porter Bangladesh, I am working to energize and engage young people to adopt new technologies and raise public awareness towards climate change, GMOs, and poverty elimination. At Network for Agribiotech and Nutrition (NABN), I want to help bridge the knowledge gap and other obstacles in the way of commercializing genetically modified crops by bringing together people from regulators, scholars, biotechnologists, and nutritionists. A major focus of my studies is developing and implementing strategies to ensure adequate intake of micronutrients, and resolving the issues related to climate change via the use of cutting-edge biotechnology in the food chain.
