PROFILE

SHORT BIOGRAPHY

Mohammad Mahfuz Ali Khan Shawan is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology at Jahangirnagar University, Savar, Dhaka, Bangladesh. He completed his SSC in 2003 from Govt. Science College Attached High School and his HSC in 2005 from Notre Dame College. He earned his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology from Jahangirnagar University in 2011 and 2012, respectively. For his M.Sc. thesis, Mr. Shawan conducted research in the Environmental Microbiology Laboratory at the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (icddr,b). He then worked as a Research Officer at icddr,b until October 2014, focusing on antimicrobial resistance in Vibrio cholerae.

In late 2014, Mr. Shawan joined Jahangirnagar University as a Lecturer in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology. He teaches both theoretical and practical classes to students from the first year to the MS level. He also supervises several research/thesis students working on topics such as bioinformatics, microbiology, biomedical engineering, biochemistry, and molecular biology. His research interests include Biochemistry, Molecular Biology, Microbiology, Cell Biology, Genetic Engineering, Biotechnology, Immunology, and Bioinformatics. Mr. Shawan has published over 31 scientific articles and a book chapter in well-reputed peer-reviewed journals (American Chemical Society, Sprinegr, Elsevier, Bentham Science, Hindawe, Bioinformation et.)  and serves as a reviewer for several renowned journals (Scientific Reports, PlosOne, Archives of Microbiology, Biotecnology Letters etc.). He has participated in around eight conferences and workshops. 

Born on July 20, 1987, in Bangladesh, Mr. Shawan currently resides with his family in Dhaka city. He enjoys traveling, reading, singing, internet surfing, watching movies, sports, and visiting exhibitions.

Job Responsibilities:

  1. Water samples collection from household as well as aquatic environment from different parts of Bangladesh.
  2. Determination of microbial load/contamination in water samples.
  3. Microscopic analysis of water samples for Zooplankton and Phytoplankton.
  4. Measurement of different physico chemical parameters of water sample i.e. temperature, pH, TDS, total hardness, salinity, turbidity etc.
  5. Microbial culture, Serology, Biochemical test, Antibiotic susceptibility testing and Molecular techniques eg. DNA extraction, Plasmid profiling, Polymerase Chain Reaction, Ribotyping (use fluorescinated probes), gel electrophoresis, cell counting by flow cytometer etc.
  6. Isolation and Identification of V. cholerae, E. coli, Coliforms, Faecal Streptococci, Salmonella, Shigella, Pseudomonas, S. aureus and C. perfringens by conventional culture technique, serology and molecular technique.
  7. Detection of V. cholerae by Direct Fluorescent Antibody (DFA) and Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) techniques.
  8. Isolation, identification and characterization (cultural, biochemical, serological and molecular) of V. cholerae in patient's rectal swabs.
  9. Determination of the presence of toxin producing genes such as, Zot, Ace (Accessory cholera enterotoxin), ctxA etc in V. cholerae O1 strains using PCR technique.
  10. Detection of Salmonella, Shigella, E.coli and Pseudomonas by PCR technique using primer for species specific genes.
  11. Analysis of antibiotic resistance pattern among clinical and environmental isolates.
  12. Determination of the presence of antibiotic resistant gene in different enteric pathogens.
  13. Investigation of genetic diversity and clonal abundance through ribotyping by using fluoresceinated probes among V. cholerae O1 isolates.
  14. Maintain the rules of Biosafety & Biosecurity in laboratory and field.
  15. Data entry, report preparation, and result analysis.
  16. Review and update quality assurance manual according to ISO guidelines for laboratory test processes and results as well as train newly hired staff on ISO guidelines and bio-safety procedures.
  17. Maintain temperature log for sample and investigational products freeze and fridger as well as main temperature log in transit through cool box; contact with bio-medical engineering for maintenance works of medical equipments; control temperature as per guidelines.
